The RCD works by constantly monitoring and comparing the current flow in both the Active and Neutral cables of an electrical installation. During normal operation, these Active and Neutral currents are in balance. However, should any current flow to Earth, an imbalance is created in these circuits. If this imbalance is sufficient, the RCD will cut the electrical supply.
